Media states reference

What each media state means in the Media Library — staged, optimized, active, orphaned, trashed, and published — so you can tell what an asset is doing.

ReferenceFor Editors and AuthorsUpdated June 8, 2026

In the Media Library, each asset shows one or more states that tell you what it is doing. This reference explains them. For the model behind staged and published media, see Staged vs published media.

Staged vs published

  • Staged — uploaded into Acrosite and ready to be committed to your repository on a future publishing commit. Staged media has not been published yet.
  • Published — committed to your repository and published to your connected site. The Media Library loads published website media on demand in its own view.

A staged asset also shows how it relates to content:

  • Active content — the asset is used by a content item that is in your active workflow, so it will be committed when that item publishes.
  • Orphaned staged media — staged but not linked to any active, archived, or trashed content. Orphaned media is safe to keep, but it counts toward your media allowance, so remove what you no longer need.
  • Trashed content — the asset is associated with content that was moved to Trash.

Processing

  • Optimized — Acrosite optimized the image on upload so the asset it stores and commits is efficient for the web.

Formats and limits

Media accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, and GIF up to 10 MB per file. See Image formats and limits.

Note
Uploading stages a file; it is published as a side effect of publishing the content that uses it, not by uploading alone.
