Fill in Custom Fields

When you edit a content item, its Custom Fields appear as structured inputs. Fill them in — required fields gate review and publishing readiness.

GuideFor Editors and AuthorsUpdated June 7, 2026

When a content type has Custom Fields, those fields appear as structured inputs in the editor whenever you create or edit an item of that type. Filling them in keeps every item consistent and feeds your site templates. This guide covers completing them.

Who this is for

Editors and Authors writing Posts, Pages, and Custom Content Type items that have Custom Fields.

Where Custom Fields appear

In the editor, the Structured Content section lists the Custom Fields the content type expects. Each field shows its label and help text, and required fields are marked so you know which ones matter before review or publishing. The inputs match each field's type — a date picker for a Date field, a dropdown for a Select, checkboxes for a Multi-select, an image picker for an Image field, and so on. See the Custom Field types reference.

Fill in the fields

  1. Open the content item in the editor and scroll to Structured Content.
  2. Complete each field using its input.
  3. Pay attention to any field marked Required — these gate review and publishing readiness.
  4. Save Draft to store the values with the item.

Missing required fields are highlighted, and the Publish Readiness checks confirm required Custom Fields are filled before the item can move forward.

How values are saved

Custom Field values are saved with the item and written into its frontmatter under each field's key when it publishes, so your site's templates can read them. See Generated Markdown and frontmatter for the shape.

Tips

  • If a field is missing from the editor, check that the field's status is active and that you are editing the right content type.
  • For Select and Multi-select fields, choose from the defined options rather than expecting free text.
