The Media Library

Every project has a Media Library where images are staged before they publish. Upload media, set alt text and captions, choose a context, and review staged and published assets.

OverviewFor Editors and AuthorsUpdated October 1, 2026

Every project has a Media Library — the place where your image assets live in Acrosite before they publish. You upload images here, give them alt text and captions, and review what is staged versus what is already published to your site. This page tours the Media Library.

Who this is for

Editors and Authors who manage a project's images.

Open the Media Library

Open your project and go to Media (also reachable as the Media card on the Content Structure page). The page summarises how many assets are staged, how many media contexts exist, and that published website media loads on demand.

Upload media

The Upload Media panel adds a new image:

  1. Choose an image file with Choose Image. Acrosite stages the file without publishing it.
  2. Pick a Media Context — for example General Project Media, or a specific content type — which helps Acrosite choose the future repository path.
  3. Optionally add Alt Text, a Title, and a Caption.
  4. Confirm with Upload Media.

Supported formats and the size limit are covered in Image formats and limits.

Staged and published media

The library has two views:

  • Staged Media — assets staged in Acrosite, ready to be committed to your repository when content that uses them publishes. Each shows whether it is linked to active content or is currently unused (orphaned).
  • Published Website Media — assets already published to your connected site. This view loads on demand when you open it.

For the full model, see Staged vs published media.

Frequently asked questions

No. Uploading stages the image in Acrosite. It is committed to your repository only when a content item that uses it publishes.
A media context tells Acrosite which content type an image belongs to, so it can choose the right future repository path — for example a Posts context maps to the Posts media folder. You pick it when uploading.
It means the staged image is not currently linked to any active, archived, or trashed content. It is safe to keep, but you can remove unused staged media to stay within your plan's media allowance.
Owners, Admins and Managers can remove staged media that nothing uses. Acrosite checks every use at the moment of removal, and once removal starts no content can start using that image. If the stored file cannot be deleted, the image shows Removal Pending and nothing can use it; open it and choose Finish Removal to complete it. Published media is never removed from your repository here.
