Source mode for Markdown and MDX
Switch the body to Source mode to write or paste Markdown and MDX directly, including content the Block Editor does not yet support.
Source mode lets you write or paste Markdown and MDX directly into a content item's body, instead of using the structured Block Editor. It is useful for power users, for migrating existing Markdown, and for content the blocks do not yet cover.
Who this is for
Editors comfortable with Markdown, and developers preparing content with MDX.
Switch to Source mode
In the editor's Body section, use the Block Editor / Source toggle and choose Source. The body switches to a plain text surface where you can type or paste Markdown and MDX. Source mode remains available alongside the Block Editor for unsupported Markdown or MDX.
What you can write
- Markdown — headings with
#,##,###, lists, links, emphasis, blockquotes, and fenced code blocks. - MDX — component-style syntax for content the standard blocks do not express. MDX is kept as trusted source text in the published output.
- Images — standard Markdown image syntax, with alt text and an optional title.
How it relates to the output
What you write in Source mode flows into the same generated file you can preview in Advanced Output Details. Headings appear as Markdown heading markers, images appear as Markdown image syntax with captions when provided, and raw MDX blocks appear exactly as you wrote them. See Generated Markdown and frontmatter for the full shape.
Tips
- Keep headings well-structured so your published Markdown stays valid and your site renders a clean outline.
- Paste carefully from other tools — review the result, since pasted HTML or unusual Markdown may not convert as expected.
- If you mostly want structure without writing Markdown by hand, the Block Editor is faster and still produces Markdown.
