Set a featured image

Add an optional featured image to a Post or content item from the editor, with alt text, an optional title, and a caption stored alongside the draft.

GuideFor Editors and AuthorsUpdated June 7, 2026

A featured image is an optional thumbnail for a Post or content item — used for previews and, on many sites, the hero image of the published page. This guide sets one from the editor.

Who this is for

Editors and Authors adding a featured image to Posts and other content items.

  1. In the editor, find the Featured Image card in the metadata rail.
  2. Choose Add Image.
  3. Pick a source in the picker:
  • Upload New Image — add a new image from your computer (it is staged in the Media Library).
  • Choose Project Media — pick a staged image already in the project Media Library.
  • Choose Published Media — pick an image already published to the connected site.
  • Image From URL — reference a safe external image URL.
  1. Add Alt Text for accessibility and SEO, an optional Title, and an optional Caption.
  2. Confirm with Done, then Save Draft to store the choice with the item.

How it is stored

The featured image is recorded in the item's frontmatter so your site templates can render it as the post thumbnail or hero. If you uploaded or chose project media, the image is committed to your repository when the item publishes — see Where media lands in your repository. An image referenced by external URL is not committed; it depends on that host staying online.

Tips

  • Always write meaningful Alt Text — it improves accessibility and SEO.
  • Prefer uploaded or project media for important images, so they live in your repository rather than depending on an external host.
  • The featured image is optional; leave it empty if your template does not use one.
