Add media in the editor

Insert an image into a content item from the body Image block or the featured image card, choosing project media, published media, a new upload, or a safe external URL.

GuideFor Editors and AuthorsUpdated June 7, 2026

You add images to a content item from inside the editor — either in the body, as part of your writing, or as the item's featured image. Both use the same picker with the same image sources. This guide covers adding media while you write.

Who this is for

Editors and Authors who place images inside Posts, Pages, and Custom Content Type items.

Add a body image

  1. In the editor's Body, with the Block Editor selected, insert an Image block.
  2. Choose the image source in the picker (below).
  3. Add Alt Text, and an optional Title and Caption. The caption appears beneath the image.

The image is stored as standard Markdown in the body, with the caption written below it. Saving the draft updates the body and its image references together.

To set the item's thumbnail instead, use the Featured Image card in the metadata rail and choose Add Image. It opens the same picker. See Set a featured image.

The image sources

The picker offers four sources:

  • Upload New Image — upload from your computer; the file is staged in the Media Library.
  • Choose Project Media — pick a staged image already in the project.
  • Choose Published Media — pick an image already published to your connected site.
  • Image From URL — reference a safe external image URL.

What happens at publish

Images you uploaded or chose from project media are committed to your repository when the content item publishes, under the project's media folder — see Where media lands in your repository. An image added by external URL is not committed; it stays a link to that external host, so use uploaded or project media for images you want to own.
